This is my desktop, of course I had to put some interesting looking source code on my screen ;). (Which is a project I started long ago and finished like 2% or something and never tested so don't start posting mistakes, it's a NES emulator btw ;)).
The only thing I coded and still using that you can see on the screenshot is my winamp deskband "plugin" (coded that like 3 or 4 years ago or something). (Can't live without it nowadays :)).

:), To start off from scratch you need to know COM (which sucks very bad, and is probably obsolete by now ;)). So it's easier to start with a "framework", the windows platform sdk contains a easy sample that you can edit and (and probably is enough for your needs).That way you don't have to do any of the COM stuff and all you have to do is some w32 drawing code (and add a timer or something).
